The importance of sunscreen is well known. According to dermatologists, applying sunscreen is the easiest way to protect the appearance and health of your skin at any age. Studies have shown that regular use of sunscreen helps prevent sunburn, skin cancer, and premature ageing.

Every sunscreen has a sun protection factor (SPF) that indicates the sunscreen's ability to protect against a specific portion of ultraviolet (UV) light called UVB.

Which sunscreen to use?

According to experts, UVB rays are responsible for sunburn and skin cancer. But how do you know which sunscreen to buy?

For daily use, choose a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30, dermatologists say. However, if you spend a lot of time outdoors, choose a product with SPF 60 or higher.

Most people don't use as much sunscreen as they should, and this higher SPF helps compensate for underuse.

Where to apply sunscreen, when and how much?

To protect yourself from the sun's harmful rays, apply about 30 grams of sunscreen to protect your face, neck, arms, legs, and other exposed areas. To protect your face and neck, you need to use about half a teaspoon of sunscreen.

Experts often emphasise reapplying sunscreen every two hours, especially after swimming or sweating. If you spend most of the day indoors and sit away from windows, you may not need to reapply sunscreen.

Who should use sunscreen?

Men, women and children over 6 months of age should use sunscreen daily. This includes people who don't tan easily — remember, your skin is damaged by sun exposure throughout your life.

Babies younger than 6 months are the only exception. Their skin is very sensitive, keeping them in shade and wearing sun-protective clothing are the best ways to protect children.

Do these things along with using sunscreen

Keep an extra bottle of sunscreen on your desk just to be safe. It's important to note that no sunscreen is perfect, and therefore, wear a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, or other protective clothing and seek shade whenever possible for added protection.
