The foundation stone of the new Bombay High Court building was laid on Wednesday by Chief Justice of India Bhushan Gavai. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, the Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court, and other dignitaries were present at the event.
Speaking at the ceremony, Chief Justice Gavai made important remarks about the judiciary and the legislature. Referring to the new building, he said he was confident that “this new building of the Bombay High Court will not become a seven-star hotel but a temple of justice.” He emphasised that the structure should reflect the democratic values enshrined in the Constitution.
Gavai stated, “While planning court buildings, we often focus on the needs of judges. However, we must not forget that we are here to serve the citizens the real stakeholders.” He noted that this was his last visit to Maharashtra before his tenure as Chief Justice ends on November 24.
He added that although he was initially hesitant to attend the event, he now felt grateful to conclude his term by laying the foundation stone of the new court building. The Chief Justice further said that the judiciary, legislature, and executive must work within the framework of the Constitution to deliver justice to society.
Calling the occasion an important milestone in the history of the Bombay High Court, Gavai said the new building, once completed, would be one of Mumbai’s grandest. He also disagreed with the criticism that Maharashtra lags behind in providing judicial infrastructure.
