Leader of Opposition (LoP) in Maharashtra Legislative Assembly, Devendra Fadnavis has alleged that the hospitals in Mumbai are breaching the protocols provided by Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).

The senior BJP leader stated that the hospitals are releasing the dead bodies of patients as non-coronavirus despite the reason death being noted as suspected COVID-19 cases.

The patients who are being admitted to hospitals as ‘suspected COVID-19 cases’ are not being tested for the coronavirus even after death. This is being done to suppress the death toll related to COVID-19, Fadnavis added.

Devendra Fadnavis has written to Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray to ensure that all protocol is followed while dealing with the coronavirus outbreak. The BJP leader said that 44 such bodies were released as suspected COVID-19 from Nair hospital in Mumbai.

“There are many more which I know of, from other hospitals too. It is my earnest request to CM to strictly follow all ICMR guidelines,” former Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis tweeted.

In his letter, Fadnavis informed that he had the medical papers of persons who were admitted as suspected COVID-19 cases. The opposition leader further stated that the patients are admitted as COVID-19 suspect cases but their swab test is not done while claiming that when the patients die, the reason is noted as suspected COVID-19 death but the body is released as non-COVID-19.

“This may bring down the COVID-19 numbers but can lead to an increased risk of infection spreading,” he added.

Earlier, Devendra Fadnavis asked Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray to withdraw the decision of not conducting COVID-19 tests of asymptomatic persons. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to selectively test asymptomatic high-risk people. The civic body has also decided that a suspected coronavirus death will be subjected to audit before confirmed as one.
