Shiv Sena leader and Rajya Sabha MP, Sanjay Raut has criticized the central government’s decision to hand over the Sushant Singh Rajput death case to the CBI, mentioning that this attacks the autonomy of the State Government. Raut also said that this is an insult to the Mumbai Police.

Speaking of the city’s police force, Raut said that the Mumbai Police is a professional force and does not “bow down to pressure”. This is in response to the wide-ranging criticism levelled on the Mumbai Police over alleged lapses in the investigation following the death of the Bollywood actor at his Mumbai home.

This was preceded by an IPS officer from Bihar, Vinay Tiwari, being put under 14-day quarantine upon his arrival at Mumbai for investigation. However, the Mumbai Police has said that the quarantine measures were imposed by the BMC (Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation) and not the Police officials.

Raut’s column on the Shiv Sena mouthpiece Saamana read - “The decision of handing over the investigation to the CBI is an attack on the state’s autonomy… But anything can happen in our country when an issue is used for political gains and as part of pressure tactics. It appears that the script of the entire Sushant episode was pre-determined and many things might have happened behind the curtains. In short, it is a conspiracy hatched against Maharashtra.”

Raut also said that the CBI has proved in the past that it is not independent and impartial. He cited the Sharada chit fund case in West Bengal wherein the CM Mamata Banerjee registered cases against members of the CBI team who were there to investigate the matter.

“Narendra Modi and Amit Shah also had the same opinion about the CBI. They had opposed the transfer of the case of Godhra riots and the subsequent killings to the CBI stating that it is a political weapon of the ruling party in Centre. What is wrong if the same opinion is expressed in the Sushant case?” Raut quipped.

Raut didn’t spare the Mumbai Police either, saying that the situation could have been handled better by holding media briefings every alternate day to provide clarity on the investigations. He also said that it needs to be checked whether this “case was used to terrorise Bollywood”.

He also spoke about the media’s role in the investigations. “One channel has been using defamatory and threatening language for Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray. The channel is getting support from a political party in Maharashtra. Sushant is just a reason but the main conspiracy is to defame the Maharashtra government and that is going on,” Raut mentioned.
