Phase 3 of the vaccination drive is going on in full swing in the entire country. On Thursday, Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray received the first shot of the coronavirus vaccine.

Thackeray received the vaccination dose at Mumbai’s JJ Hospital. Post the jab, he urged the people to follow social distancing, wear masks and avoid unnecessary travel and also warned that if the cases continue to spike the state will have to consider a lockdown. Thackeray said, "We might have to impose a lockdown in some areas if rules are not followed".

Earlier this month, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar and his family had taken the first dose of COVID-19 vaccine at a civic hospital in Mumbai. Even Maharashtra Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari was administered the first shot of a COVID-19 vaccine at the state-run JJ Hospital here on Friday.

Cases continue to spike in Maharashtra

Currently, there are more than 99,000 active cases in the state and that has become a cause of concern. Many stringent measures are being taken the get this spike under control.

Mumbai on the other hand had reported 1,539 new COVID-19 cases, 888 recoveries and five deaths on Wednesday, March 10, taking the total number of cases in the financial capital to 3,37,123.

Lockdown in Nagpur

Earlier today a lockdown has been imposed in Nagpur. The administration said that the will remain in place from March 15 to March 21. The decision was taken during a meeting at the Divisional Commissioner's office.

Nagpur Guardian Minister Nitin Raut said during the period of the lockdown, only essential services like vegetable shops and milk booths will be allowed to remain open.

As per reports, Nagpur has registered 1,710 cases in the last 24 hours while eight people lost their lives due to the infection. A total of 10,458 samples were examined.

It is a little ironic that exactly one year ago, the first COVID-19 patient was recorded in Nagpur.
