Senior Congress leader Sanjay Nirupam on Thursday attacked the Shiv Sena-led Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government accusing that the government intends to continue with the metro ‘car shed’ work in Aarey colony of Mumbai.

This comes after Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray announced that 600-acres of land in the Aarey colony near Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP) will be reserved as a forest.

The decision was taken in a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray. Maharashtra Environment Minister Aaditya Thackeray was also present during the meeting. However, the area excludes the land on which the proposed car shed is supposed to come up.

Reacting to this, Nirupam said that this move is a betrayal by Shiv Sena and there is a conspiracy to continue the work of the car shed at the same place. He further questioned the model of development adopted by the Uddhav Thackeray government.

“Government yesterday declared the Aarey in 600-acre area as protected forest. However, the proposed Metro Car Shed is excluded. This is a betrayal by Shiv Sena and there is a conspiracy to continue the work of the car shed at the same place. The metro station in the middle of the jungle and forest in the middle of the city! What model of development is this? (sic),” Nirupam said.

Meanwhile, the Maharashtra government has directed that rights of the Adivasi community, as well as other concerned communities, should not be violated. Section four has been imposed on the reserved forest area.
