As the number of cases for the coronavirus or COVID-19 increases to 125 with four deaths, Maharashtra Tourism and Environment Minister Aaditya Thackeray on Thursday night informed that the government is trying to reach out to those stuck in parts of the state.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray has asked all District Collectors to search for those stranded including pilgrims, labours and others.
“CM Uddhav Thackeray ji has asked all District Collectors to find and reach out to all those from other states- pilgrims, labour etc, stuck in Maharashtra due to lockdown and ensure that they are looked after by Maharashtra (sic),” Aaditya Thackeray tweeted.
The minister further informed that the state government will contact the Chief Minister Offices of other states where people from Maharashtra are stranded due to the nationwide lockdown announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday.
“The Maharashtra CMO will connect with other CMOs and ensure they are comfortable,” Thackeray tweeted.
The Chief Minister’s move comes amid multiple reports which narrate that people from the unorganised sector are suffering the most during the 21-days countrywide lockdown as they can’t sustain themselves in the city if there’s no work.
Meanwhile, the Maharashtra government also released 11,000 prisoners on parole amid the coronavirus outbreak. “The undertrials and convicts jailed for offences with punishment up to seven or fewer years should be released on emergency parole,” State Home Minister Anil Deshmukh said.
This is being done to curb overcrowding in the prisons amid the coronavirus outbreak. The Prime Minister on Tuesday announced a nationwide lockdown for 21-days in order to tackle the ongoing coronavirus crisis as the total number of cases in the country have increased to 694 with 14 deaths.
Maharashtra is the epicentre of the coronavirus outbreak with 135 positive COVID-19 cases, as of March 26, and the death toll stands at five. The number of cases for the coronavirus or COVID-19 in Mumbai has increased to 51.
