Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh on Thursday briefed that the police department has issued a total of 4.47 lakh passes for essential services in the state since the lockdown. Moreover, over six lakh people have been quarantined amid the coronavirus outbreak.
The minister further said that nearly 1.22 lakh offences have been registered under section 188 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) from March 22 to June 3 under which a total of 23,820 persons have been arrested. Approximately ₹6.38 crore has been collected as fine under various offences, Deshmukh informed.
The Maharashtra Home Minister said that the police force, health department, doctors and nurses are working day and night to fight coronavirus outbreak in the state. However, there have been reports of an attack against frontline workers.
The Police department has been instructed to take strict action against those who attack the frontline workers in the fight against coronavirus. Nearly 258 instances of attacks on police personnel have also been reported during this period, Deshmukh said while adding that 838 persons have been arrested in this regard and action is being taken against them.
The minister also said that the emergency telephone number ‘100’ is operational in all police station of every district for 24 hours. During the lockdown, the police have received over one lakh calls at the emergency number, all of which have been duly noted.
During the lockdown period, 1,330 vehicles have been penalised and 79,775 vehicles have also been seized. Moreover, 15 cases of visa violations by foreign nationals have also been registered across Maharashtra, Deshmukh said.
The minister informed that control rooms have been set up across the state to provide immediate help to police personnel with any symptoms related to COVID-19. Currently, 191 police officers and 1319 personnel have been affected and are undergoing treatment.
