Maharashtra: Elections For De-reserved OBC Seats To Be Conducted On January 18

Post the Supreme Court order on renotifying seats reserved for the OBCs in the local body polls, the Maharashtra State Election Commission has mentioned that elections for seats previously set aside for the Other Backward Castes (OBC) Category will be conducted on January 18, highlighted reports.

Based on accounts, whilst certain local body polls were slated to be held on December 21, the Supreme Court has asked that seats for the OBCs be treated like that for the general. Therefore, the seats put aside for the OBC section will now be deserved. Elections for which will be held on January 18.

Results for this are anticipated to be announced on January 19. Certain narratives have quoted secretary to the State Election Commission, K V Kurundkar who elaborated on how the seats for the OBC will now be treated as that of the general category. Adding that 50 per cent will have to be accorded to women.

Kurundkar is reported to have further remarked that directives have already been issued to the collectors to see to it that reservations are there for women in general category seats.

Previously, the State Election Commission (SEC) deferred the local body polls for the OBC category in the aftermath of the Supreme Court putting on hold the elections to seats reserved for the OBC category.
