The State Election Commission (SEC) on Tuesday, December 7, deferred the local body polls for the Other Backward Classes (OBC) category. This comes in the aftermath of the Supreme Court putting on hold the elections to seats reserved for the OBC category, stated reports.

A press note proclaimed by the State Election Commissioner UPS Madan elaborated on how in accordance with the directives of the apex court, the decision has been undertaken to defer the local body polls for the OBC category.

It, however, mentioned that the elections for the non-OBC category that entails Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe and General categories will be undertaken as mentioned earlier.

According to reports, on December 21, elections 106 nagar panchayats, Bhandara and Gondia Zilla Parishad including panchayat samitis within its purview will be held. Alongside this polling for four vacant mahanagarpalika seats and 4,554 gram panchayats’ 7,130 vacant seats will also be undertaken.

The SEC remarked that polling on all the OBC seats through all the local bodies have been deferred until further orders from the Supreme Court. In light of this, local bodies and seats wherein in the elections have been deferred include 23 seats in Bhandara and Gondia Zilla Parishad (aggregate seats 105); 15 seats in Bhandara, 45 seats in Gondia panchayat samitis (aggregate seats 210), 344 seats in 106 nagar panchayat (aggregate seats 1802); and bypolls to one municipal council (aggregate seats four).
