Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray on Monday asserted Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to strictly implement the policy and rules regarding the hawkers' issue.
If the rules and policies regarding Hawkers' issue are not implemented strictly, MNS will again stage a protest over this issue,” MNS chief Raj Thackeray wrote in a letter to BMC Commissioner Ajoy Mehta.
After the Elphinstone stampede incident, MNS had agitated against the unauthorised placing of hawkers near the railway stations. Meanwhile, the civic bodies in Mumbai, Thane, Navi Mumbai had ordered the hawkers to sit 150 metres away from the railway station or else they’ll be prosecuted.
In the letter, the MNS chief wrote that the situation has become same like before with hawkers sitting outside the railway station. Therefore, he insisted that the BMC should focus on implementing its policies on this issue.

Under the hawkers policy, BMC has fixed 10,000 vicinities for the hawkers to do their business. The vicinities have been divided into six wards and to go ahead with their business, the hawkers will have to officially submit license and domicile certificate to the civic body. However, the hawkers' organisations associated with the opposition parties opposed the decision to submit domicile certificate.
MNS chief, in the letter, has asked for proper implementation of hawker policy and has said that hawkers who have given domicile certificate shall be allowed to do their business.
