Prakash Ambedkar on Tuesday issued a strong warning to the Maharashtra Mahayuti government over its proposed move to sub-classify Scheduled Caste (SC) reservations, calling the process unscientific and lacking transparency.
Ambedkar alleged that dividing SC reservations into multiple categories is being pursued without proper data, consultation, or public disclosure. He cautioned that such steps could dilute the original intent of reservation policies and create divisions within Dalit communities.
Raising constitutional concerns, he stated that only Parliament has the authority to make structural changes to SC reservations, and questioned the state government’s role in the matter. He also criticised the report prepared by the Justice Badar Committee, noting that it has not been made public and lacks clarity on its methodology.
Warning of potential unrest, Ambedkar said that mishandling the issue could trigger widespread dissatisfaction and protests among affected communities. He urged the government to release the committee report and adopt a transparent, inclusive approach before making any decisions.
