Sanjay Nirupam Opposes Mandatory Marathi Rule for Taxi and Rickshaw Drivers in Maharashtra

Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Nirupam has criticised Maharashtra Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik’s decision to make Marathi language mandatory for rickshaw and taxi drivers across the state.

He argued that while promoting the state language is important, enforcing it as a strict requirement could create unnecessary pressure and fear among drivers, many of whom come from diverse linguistic backgrounds.

Nirupam said the policy may end up penalising working drivers rather than helping them learn Marathi in a supportive environment.

He suggested that the government should focus on gradual language training and awareness instead of compulsory enforcement. He has urged authorities to reconsider the decision and adopt a more balanced and inclusive approach that does not affect the livelihoods of drivers.
