In a significant case that highlights the dangers of ignoring persistent spine problems, a 37-year-old house help who had been struggling with severe leg pain and difficulty walking for nearly two years found immediate relief after advanced spine surgery at Apex Hospitals, Borivali. The patient had been suffering from repeated episodes of severe left leg pain for the past two years. However, in the last two months, the pain became unbearable, affecting her ability to work and manage even basic daily activities. Her condition had worsened to such an extent that she could not walk even 100 meters or stand for more than a minute without severe pain shooting down her leg.

MRI and diagnostic tests revealed a massive disc prolapse at the L4-L5 level along with a foraminal disc herniation at the L2-L3 level on the left side, causing severe nerve compression. Considering the long history of pain, nerve compression, and reduced mobility, doctors planned a comprehensive surgery to address both spinal levels. The lower spinal segment was also stabilized using implants due to a spinal deformity observed on X-ray. The surgery was performed by the spine surgery team, and anaesthesia was safely managed by Dr. Roshani Shah, who played a crucial role in ensuring a smooth and safe surgical procedure. The results were immediate and remarkable. The patient’s leg pain was relieved soon after surgery. She was able to stand and walk the very next day and was discharged within two days, marking a rapid recovery after suffering for nearly two years.

Dr. Umang Sheth, Specialized orthopedic and spine surgeon at Apex Hospital Borivali  said, “Many patients continue to live with severe pain for months or even years, hoping it will settle with medicines or rest. But when nerve compression becomes severe, the pain can become disabling and affect walking and independence. The most important message is this — don’t ignore pain that affects your daily life. With the right diagnosis and the right treatment at the right time, even serious spine conditions can be treated successfully and patients can return to a normal, pain-free life.”

Dr. Umang Sheth further added that such spine problems, especially slipped disc and nerve compression, are now very common in people between the ages of 30 and 50. However, many patients continue to ignore symptoms like back pain, leg pain, numbness, or difficulty walking. Instead of consulting a specialist, people often depend on painkillers, massages, or rest, which only gives temporary relief while the condition continues to worsen. By the time many patients reach a spine specialist, the nerve compression has already become severe, sometimes even affecting walking. Doctors say early diagnosis and timely treatment can prevent surgery in many cases, and even when surgery is required, recovery is much faster if done at the right time.

This case sends a strong message that persistent back pain, leg pain, numbness, or difficulty walking should never be ignored, as timely treatment can prevent long-term disability and restore mobility.
