A matter of relief for all commuters travelling to and fro Parel railway station, Central Railway has started a new platform and also a new foot overbridge (FOB) at the station on Sunday. The first train to pass through the new platform was the 6:29 PM Kalyan-bound local.

The new FOB is 12-metres wide and only operational from the Eastern side. The construction of the other end of the bridge towards the Elphinstone railway station will be undertaken by the Western Railway (WR).

There are three temporary-connectors laid on the tracks between old and new platform at three spots. This is meant for the convenience of the commuters. All the facilities are a part of the ₹51-crore Parel terminus project launched in September 2017 after 23 people were killed in a stampede at Elphinstone Railway Station.

As more and more business avenues have come up in the vicinity, the footfall at Parel and Elphinstone Railway Station has leapt up in the past one-and-a-half decade. Passengers believe that the new FOB will help to decongest Parel station.
