On Friday, February 11, the Bombay High Court extended time till February 18, for the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) as well as the state government to submit the report of the committee appointed to assess the demands of the corporation’s employees to be treated as government employees.
Based on accounts, almost 90,000 corporation employees have been on strike since October 2021 while pressing their demands.
A bench of Chief Justice Dipankar Datta and Justice Makarand S Karnik gave the MSRTC’s request for additional time after the high-level committee couldn’t submit its report by February 3.
This was within the 12-week time frame accorded by the court on November 8, 2021, when it ordered that the committee be constituted. The Chief Secretary is heading the three-member panel, while the MSRTC managing director is its coordinator.
According to reports, state chief minister Uddhav Thackeray was asked to tell the court his views on the recommendations made by the committee prior to February 5.
Earlier the high court had ordered the government as well the state transport corporation to give the committee’s suggestions with Thackeray’s thoughts to the court’s registrar general through a sealed cover by February 18.
The judges further added that the matter will now be heard on February 22.
