Mumbai: Major Revamp Planned for Dadar Railway Station; New Platform Under 5th–6th Line Project

A major transformation is planned for Dadar Railway Station, one of the city’s busiest transit hubs, with Central Railway proposing a new platform under the 5th–6th line project. The platform will be constructed between Central Railway and Western Railway, aiming to ease congestion at the station.

To facilitate the project, land acquisition is being carried out on the Western Railway side. This has impacted encroachments in the Dalvi Nagar area, where a total of 46 encroachments have been identified. Notices have been issued to 40 occupants, while six cases are still under process. Additionally, 14 cases are currently pending before the Bombay High Court.

Under the rehabilitation plan, 15 affected individuals have been allotted alternative housing. Of these, 13 structures have already been demolished, while two remain. Discussions are ongoing with the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) regarding rehabilitation or allotment of commercial units for 11 remaining cases.

Officials said the new platform will primarily cater to suburban local trains, which is expected to streamline operations during peak hours and improve punctuality. The project will also bring significant changes to platform numbering at the station.

Currently, Western Railway has seven platforms, with one more under construction, while Central Railway also operates seven platforms and has an additional one planned. Once all works are completed, a new numbering system will be introduced to avoid confusion.

Handling lakhs of commuters daily, the upgrade of Dadar station is considered crucial. The addition of a new platform and track expansion is expected to enhance capacity, reduce delays, and improve overall traffic management.
