The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has taken up key infrastructure work to improve the capacity and pressure of the city’s water supply system. As part of this initiative, processes such as charging, flushing, chlorination, and de-chlorination will be carried out through water tunnels.
The work is scheduled between April 20 and April 27, during which a 5% reduction in water supply will be implemented in certain parts of Mumbai.
To strengthen the water distribution system, the civic body has developed two major water tunnels. Water Tunnel 1 runs from Amar Mahal (Hegdewar Garden) via Wadala (Pratiksha Nagar) to Parel. Water Tunnel 2 also originates from Amar Mahal and extends to Trombay low-level and further to Trombay high-level reservoirs.
Regular maintenance is essential to ensure safe and smooth water supply through these tunnels. The ongoing processes are expected to improve water quality and enhance supply pressure.
Due to the maintenance work, several areas will face reduced water supply for about a week. In the eastern suburbs, Kurla East, Mankhurd, Deonar, Govandi, Ghatkopar, Bhandup, and Mulund will be affected. In the island city, areas such as Fort, Churchgate, Dongri, Marine Lines, Byculla, Parel, Sewri, Wadala, and Sion will experience low-pressure water supply.
The civic body has appealed to citizens to use water judiciously during this period and store only the required amount. Officials have assured that once the maintenance work is completed, the water supply will become more efficient, with better pressure and improved quality.
