The proposed extension of Mumbai Metro Line 5 from Kalyan to Ulhasnagar has received approval from the Central Government, paving the way for further construction of the corridor.
The approval covers the revised alignments for three sections of Metro 5, Dhamankar Naka to Durgadi, Durgadi to Kalyan and Bhoirwadi to Ulhasnagar. The notification approving the alignment was issued on August 28.
The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is expected to invite tenders for the construction work soon. Once completed, the extension is expected to improve connectivity between Thane, Kalyan and Ulhasnagar and reduce travel time for commuters.
Metro Line 5, also known as the Thane-Bhiwandi-Kalyan corridor, is a 24.9-km project with an estimated cost of ₹8,400 crore. Work on the first section between Kapurbawdi and Dhamankar Naka is reportedly nearing completion.
The revised Dhamankar Naka-Durgadi section will be 10.48 km long and have six stations, while the Durgadi-Kalyan section will cover 11.82 km with seven stations. The proposed Bhoirwadi-Ulhasnagar extension will stretch for 5.27 km.
The extension is expected to strengthen public transport connectivity in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region and provide commuters in Kalyan and Ulhasnagar with faster access to neighbouring areas.
