Mumbai Metro Lines 2A, 7, 9 and 2B recorded their highest-ever single-day ridership on July 9, with 3,65,845 passenger journeys, setting a new benchmark for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA)-operated metro network.
The latest milestone marks the third time this monsoon that the metro network has broken its own daily ridership record. The previous records were 3,58,115 passenger journeys on June 23 and 3,57,895 passenger journeys on June 19, reflecting a steady increase in commuter patronage.
According to MMRDA, the metro network has been witnessing consistent growth in passenger traffic, driven by improved connectivity, reliable services and the expansion of operational corridors. Officials said the rising ridership underscores the growing preference for metro travel across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
The network also registered its highest-ever usage of WhatsApp-based paperless ticketing, with thousands of commuters opting for QR-code tickets through the platform. MMRDA said the increasing adoption of digital ticketing has helped make travel more convenient while reducing queues at station ticket counters.
Officials expect ridership to continue rising as additional metro corridors become operational and last-mile connectivity improves, further strengthening the role of the metro network in Mumbai's public transport system.
