After nine-month break, the Monorail will be back on tracks from September 1, 2018, and will run between Chembur and Wadala. However, Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) have to pay a fortune for the same. Monorail, which is already reeling in loss has to suffer more financial loss. Initially, MMRDA used to pay the operators — Scomi and L&T company — ₹4,600 per trip but now MMRDA has to pay ₹10,600 per trip.

In the last three to four years, the monorail has been running between Chembur and Wadala. However, monorail failed to lure commuters, owing to which, the monorail witnessed financial loss of ₹6 to ₹7 lakh on a daily basis. To add to this, nine-months ago, two monorail compartments caught fire and the service was shut down indefinitely.

Maintenance charges of the monorail will put the burden on MMRDA but it will not affect monorail rates, assured MMRDA spokesperson Kawatkar.
