Mumbai Monorail Services Yet to Resume; Reopening Likely by May-End

The resumption of services on the Mumbai Monorail corridor between Chembur and Jacob Circle has been delayed, with authorities now indicating that operations are likely to restart by the end of May.

The monorail, operated by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority, has remained suspended since September 2025 to facilitate a comprehensive overhaul, including upgrades to signalling systems, induction of new rakes, and infrastructure improvements.

Officials said that while initial trials and testing have been completed, a second layer of safety certification and inspection is still pending. Due to this, the earlier target of early May could not be met, pushing the expected reopening to May-end.

The ongoing tests are aimed at assessing train performance, signalling systems, communication networks, and overall operational readiness before clearance for passenger services is granted.

The delay reflects a cautious approach by authorities, especially in light of past technical glitches and safety concerns that had led to the suspension of services.

The Mumbai Monorail, which connects Chembur, Wadala, and Jacob Circle, is a key feeder system for east–west connectivity. However, its prolonged shutdown has affected daily commuters relying on the service.
