Mumbai–Pune Expressway Closed for Over 30 Hours After Hazardous Gas Leak

Traffic on the MumbaiPune Expressway was shut for more than 30 hours after a tanker carrying highly flammable propylene gas overturned near the Adoshi tunnel in the Khandala Ghat section on Tuesday evening.

Following the accident, gas began leaking from multiple valves of the tanker, posing a serious risk of explosion. As a precaution, authorities completely closed the expressway and diverted vehicles to the old Mumbai–Pune highway and other alternative routes.

The closure led to massive traffic congestion, with 20–25 km-long traffic jams on both sides of the expressway. Thousands of commuters were stranded for hours, many without access to food, drinking water, or basic facilities. This was the longest shutdown in the expressway’s history since it opened in 2002.

Emergency response teams, including technical experts from Bharat Petroleum, Hindustan Petroleum, and Reliance, were deployed to control the situation. After prolonged efforts, two of the three leaking valves were sealed, and the remaining gas was safely transferred to another tanker. The damaged tanker was later removed from the site.

By Wednesday night, the leak was fully brought under control, and traffic movement on the expressway was gradually restored.
