The Navi Mumbai Municipal Transport (NMMT) has strengthened its public transport fleet with the induction of 150 new CNG-powered buses. The new buses were inaugurated by Maharashtra Forest Minister Ganesh Naik at the Ghansoli depot in the presence of Mayor Sujata Patil and Deputy Mayor Dashrath Bhagat.
The newly inducted CNG buses are designed to provide a modern, environmentally friendly, and comfortable travel experience for passengers. With their addition, NMMT aims to further improve the quality and efficiency of its public transport services.
NMMT currently operates a fleet of 416 buses. Of the 150 new CNG buses planned for induction, 65 have already been delivered, while the remaining 85 are expected to join the fleet in the coming months. During the ceremony, 51 of the newly received buses were formally flagged off.
Speaking at the event, Forest Minister Ganesh Naik said the new CNG buses would offer passengers safer, more comfortable, and eco-friendly travel while enhancing the efficiency of the city's public transport system. He also noted that the buses would help reduce fuel costs and contribute to environmental conservation.
Mayor Sujata Patil highlighted the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation's initiative to train 400 women as bus drivers through its Social Development Department. She said the programme would enable women to operate NMMT buses in the future, while praising the transport undertaking for providing reliable and safe public transport services to residents.
Transport Committee Chairman Vikas Zanjad outlined several measures being implemented to strengthen the transport undertaking and make it financially self-sufficient. He also said multiple decisions had been taken to safeguard the welfare of NMMT conductors, drivers, and other employees.
