A key highlight of the project is the construction of three tunnels, Nadhal, Kirawali and Wavarle. Among them, the Wavarle tunnel, measuring approximately 2.62 kilometres, will be the longest tunnel in the Mumbai suburban railway network once completed.
To address challenges posed by heavy monsoon rains and hilly terrain, the tunnels are being built with waterproof linings to prevent water seepage and structural damage. This feature is expected to significantly improve durability and safety.
The corridor will also introduce ballastless (slab) tracks inside the tunnels instead of traditional stone-based ballast tracks. These concrete-based tracks require less maintenance, offer greater stability, and provide a smoother ride for passengers.
Safety measures such as designated refuge areas and reinforced concrete structures are being incorporated within the tunnels to enhance passenger protection and operational reliability.
The 29.6-kilometre double-line corridor will connect Panvel and Karjat with intermediate stations at Chikhle, Poyanje and Chowk. A large portion of the project has already been completed, and once operational, it is expected to ease pressure on existing suburban routes and improve travel efficiency for daily commuters.
