Maharashtra government has allocated a seven-storey building at a government colony in Bandra for the residents of Savitribai Phule Girls Hostel. This decision came after an 18-year-old girl was raped and murdered at a government hostel in Marine Drive approximately a month ago.
The building is part of a larger project designated for government employees. Now, this building will temporarily address the housing needs of the young women.
Earlier, the structure of the current hostel was deemed dilapidated. This resulted in only a few girls residing there. Plans are in place to replace the deteriorating hostel with a new seven-storey building after necessary repairs.
Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has authorised the 450 ladies from the Savitribai Phule hostel to stay in the government colony building until the new hostel is constructed.
The authorities will also install panic alarms in the rooms. Additionally, female security guards will be hired to maintain a safe and secure environment for the residents.
The tragic incident happened when the security guard was found guilty in the rape and murder case. He later committed suicide. This incident raised concerns about the security of the girls hostel.
The family of the deceased girl has received a settlement of INR 5 lakh. The deceased girl's brother has also been offered a position at Amravati Engineering College.
The family has also sought further assistance through the government's Manodhairya programme, which aims to support victims of sexual assault. They have requested INR 10 lakh as compensation under the programme.
