Maharashtra legislative council (MLC) elections from two graduate and two teachers’ constituencies will be held on June 10. The counting will be held on June 13, said the Election Commission of India (ECI).

In an official statement, the EC further mentioned that the last date for filing nominations is May 22. Scrutiny of nomination forms will take place on May 24, while the last date for withdrawal is May 27.

It is pertinent to note that the term of the four MLCs is expiring on July 7. MLCs retiring are Vilas Potnis of Shiv Sena - UBT (Mumbai Graduates’ constituency), Kapil Patil - independent (Mumbai teachers’ constituency), Kishore Darade of Shiv Sena - UBT (Nashik division teachers’ constituency) and Niranjan Davkhare - BJP (Konkan division Graduates’ constituency).

As per the statement, out of 78 seats in the legislative council, 21 seats are vacant. Of the total,12 MLCs, which are governor appointed. A case regarding appointment of these seats is pending in the court. With these four seats, the total vacancies are now at 25.

Meanwhile, the remaining nine are selected through local body representatives. However, they remain vacant as the local body elections have not taken place in the state for the last four years.
