Now every police station in Mumbai has a separate mobile number for women in order for them to register complaints of harassment, reports stated. Apart from the general police helpline numbers, these mobile numbers will also be added.

Their purpose, according to reports, is to enhance police response time in cases of crime against women which will enable them to accord them a first priority. This comes as part of the Nirbhaya initiative that was commenced by the police.

It comes in the aftermath of the Sakinaka rape incident in September 2021. Joint Commissioner of Police (Law & order) Vishwas Nangre-Patil was quoted by narratives elaborating on how it has been a week since the drive commenced.

Based on accounts, Reliance Industries offered 100 mobile phones to the Mumbai Police which will be offered for free for three years. Police stations have been asked to publicize their respective mobile numbers. They are supposed to do so at police stations, schools, colleges as well as Nirbhaya vans.

Other than these numbers, it has been reported that five counselling centres for each region in the city with help from funds provided by MLAs will also be started.
