The coronavirus pandemic has disrupted every aspect of our lives across the globe. There is a challenge before the people on health and economic front. On the one hand, people are focused on paying attention to their health. On the other hand, many are struggling to save their livelihood amid the coronavirus outbreak.

The cities in India saw a mass exodus of migrant workers after the lockdown was announced. However, now that the economic activities are being resumed, the workers are coming back to cities. The lockdown has severely affected several industries including those operating public toilets.

After the lockdown was announced, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said that the ‘pay and use’ service provided by the public toilet operators will be free. However, this incurred huge losses to the public toilet operators.

During the lockdown period, the ‘pay and use’ service was made free for people. However, public toilet operators will have to pay maintenance cost and electricity bills. With no profits or earning, the public toilet operators are paying bills with their own pocket.

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Manisha Chaudhary has Witten a letter to Mumbai’s civic body regarding this. She has demanded the BMC to provide relief in the payment of electricity bill for the ‘pay and use’ service.

Meanwhile, Matheran - which is one of the popular locations preferred by tourists who visit Mumbai - has witnessed a huge deterioration in the tourist business due to the lockdown. Several families are living under difficult circumstances for a few months now. It is said that the location will not be open to the tourists until September 2020, and this is likely to worsen the situation.
