As per the weather forecasting body Skymet, in the last 2-3 days, Mumbai and suburbs have been receiving on and off showers. Due to these showers, the weather over Mumbai and suburbs is cloudy and comfortable.

These on and off showers around the catchment area has also resulted in the lakes to be almost full.

There are seven lakes - Bhatsa, Tansa, Upper Vaitarna, Middle Vaitarna, Modak Sagar on Thane-Nashik belt and Tulsi and Vihar in Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SNGP) which provide water to the city of Mumbai.

On Thursday, Tansa lake started to overflow, which is the fourth water body to overflow. The city’s seven lakes are nearing 94 per cent of their total supply capacity as of Sunday morning.

Mumbai’s lake levels are at 90.88 per cent as on Friday morning. In comparison, the water level was at 94.91 per cent on the same day in 2019, and 93.91 per cent in 2018. On August 5, water levels stood at just 37.36 per cent. Given the shortfall in the water in the catchment area, BMC had announced a 20 per cent water cut on August 5. With the rains significantly improving in this week, there has been a demand for lifting the said water cut.

Last week the water cut was reduced to 10 per cent. The BMC had indicated that they will withdraw the remaining 10 per cent of the water cut in a day or two once the level crosses 95 per cent

Till Saturday morning, the Santacruz observatory recorded 990.5mm rainfall in the month of August, which is the highest that the city has got in nine years. The earlier highest rainfall was recorded in August 2010 when the city received 1,036.5mm of rainfall.
