Plastic ban will be carried out only in public places

A few hours away from the plastic ban, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is all set to slap a fine of ₹5,000 on the use of thermocol and plastic bags. However, many people are still confused about the ban and whether it will be applicable in houses. The civic body cleared that the ban will only be applicable in public places, malls, and shops.

These things will not be allowed

  • Thermocol plates, cups
  • Plastic cup, glasses, spoons
  • Package boxes used in hotels
  • Plastic straw
  • Thermocol used for decoration
  • Plastic bags used for milk packaging

These things will be allowed

  • Amul, Gokul milk bags
  • Raincoat, books cover
  • Plastic tiffins

BMC will take action in these places

  • Shops, Malls, Caterers, Hawkers, Market, Schools and Colleges, Theatres, Function Hall

What should one do post-plastic ban

  • Use jute or cloth bags
  • Use steel or glass water bottles
  • Carry steel containers to buy meat, milk, curd

What will be the penalty

First-time offenders will have to pay fine of ₹5,000, second-time offenders will be charged ₹10,000 and the third-time offender will be charged ₹25,000.

In order to get rid of the plastic use, the BMC has placed bins to collect plastic waste. Along with this, societies can contact BMC’s toll-free number i.e. 1800222357 and the latter will send the vehicle to collect waste.
