The State Government’s initiative of banning plastic bags is going to affect fisherwomen as they preserve their fish in thermocol-made boxes. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has asked fisherwomen to buy good quality plastic boxes or else, they will have to discard the fish or sell it at a lower price.

Along with the storage woes, the fisherwomen are in dilemma owing to the ban as the former mostly sell fish in plastic bags. And now with the ban, they will have to sell fish either in nylon or rexine bags.

The BMC officials have made themselves clear on the plastic ban adding that along with fisherwomen, shop owners, street side shopkeepers and hawkers will be prosecuted on the use of plastic bags.


Currently, the thermocol box costs ₹100 and plastic box costs 2.5k to 5k. If we can’t use plastic bags, the BMC should make nylon or rexine bags available in the market,” demanded Nayna Patil, fisherwoman, Kalina Market.
