The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will soon conduct immunization programmes meant specifically for specially-abled citizens across Mumbai. Officials said that a special centre will be established in every corporator’s electoral ward to help specially-abled individuals get their vaccine.
A BMC official said, “Specially abled people cannot wait in a queue and it will be very difficult to take them to centres. Currently, due to shortage of vaccines, all centres are witnessing crowds and waiting goes up to 4-5 hours. Many organisations had demanded separate centres for specially-abled citizens.”

However, this initiative will only reach its goal when vaccines are available for everyone. The civic body is currently preparing for the likelihood of a third wave of the coronavirus and is aiming to inoculate a majority of the city’s population by then.
Additional Municipal Commissioner of the BMC, Suresh Kakani said, “We are planning to set up vaccination centres for specially-abled persons so that they do not have to travel far. Currently, we have very limited stock of vaccines. But when the supply increases, we will set up centres for such people in corporators’ wards.”

“The centres can be started soon and the BMC will coordinate with organisations who are working for specially-abled people to take up vaccination drives for them,” Kakani added.
The BMC currently has over 170 vaccination centres across Mumbai to administer jabs for people over the age of 18. The civic body had previously announced that they would bring vaccination centres to 227 corporator wards in Mumbai. But this has been hindered due to the limited availability of vaccines over the past few weeks.
