Mumbai’s vaccination efforts are receiving a much-needed boost as a Jain temple (Derasar) at JB Nagar (Andheri East) has been converted into a vaccination centre equipped with CCTV cameras, refrigerators to store vaccines, and rooms for doctors on the site.

We have previously seen religious centres being converted into COVID treatment facilities, but this is the first time that a place of worship will be used to immunize people against the coronavirus

Vaccinations at the site will start Tuesday, May 11, and will be managed by Seven Hills Hospital. This location has been listed as ‘Tarunbharat Jain Mandir’ on the centre’s CoWin app.

Jinesh Shah, a local resident and key figure in putting this initiative together said, “The derasar will be open to vaccinate everyone, irrespective of caste, creed and religion; vaccination will be done as per MCGM directions.”

The idea was conceived by the managing committee of the Kantinagar Shwetambar Murtipujak Tapagach Jain Sangh.

Its secretary, Sanjay Vora said, “The temples have been closed for almost a year now. If it has the necessary space and other infrastructure to support the vaccination drive, then why not, since it’s for the benefit of society.”

This move has prompted other temples to follow suit. The Derasar at IIT Market (S Ward) has reportedly sought permission to administer vaccines to eligible individuals.
