Public Works Department (PWD) has estimated that the recent heavy rainfall, floods and landslides across several districts have damaged several roads leading to a loss of approximately INR 1,800 crore.
Information regarding the same was given by State Public Works Minister Ashok Chavan while interacting with the media. Sharing more information, he said that recent monsoon-related crisis have caused severe damage to many roads and bridges in all parts of the state. One of the severe damages was noted in Konkan region leading a loss of INR 700 crore. This was followed by Pune, Amravati, Aurangabad. Nagpur and Nashik divisions.
District-wise Chief Engineers and equivalent level officers have been appointed to inspect the damage across worst affected districts of Konkan and Western Maharashtra. Periodic rainfall is observed across many places and the work of clearing the rubble is underway. Officials conducted a check by physically visiting the places thereby inspecting the damages. The above-mentioned figures were reported based on the primary estimations made through the photographs and drones.
According to preliminary estimates, over 290 roads were closed, 469 roads were disrupted and 140 bridges and culverts were submerged. The final inspection report could report an increase in the amount caused by damages.
Officials from the PWD met
in Mumbai on Tuesday, August 3, 2021, to review the situation in the state. Minister Ashok Chavan informed about the telephone conversation with Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari where matters regarding the damages reported on the national highways in the state were shared.
