Despite the Supreme Court’s interim stay on the Maratha reservation, Home Minister Anil Deshmukh on Thursday said that his department will check whether 13 per cent posts in police recruitment can be set aside for the Maratha community.
Deshmukh asserted that the state government is making every effort to push the reservation of the Maratha community. As the state government has decided to recruit 12,000 police personnel, Deshmukh stated that he will corroborate as per the law whether 13 per cent seats of the Maratha community can be set aside for the recruitment of the police personnel.
In the meeting of the state cabinet held on Wednesday, September 16, it was decided to recruit police personnel for 12,528 posts in Maharashtra. This is the first time in the history of Maharashtra that such massive recruitment will take place. This process of police recruitment is to be initiated as soon as possible. This decision will give an opportunity to the youth in the urban and rural areas of Maharashtra to join the police department.
This comes as Deshmukh tries to keep the Maratha community in its stride as the pro-Maratha quota organisations have given calls to launch state agitation in case of denial of reservation. Furthermore, the state Cabinet has directed the Home Department to take further action in the matter on the advice of the General Administration Department and the Law and Justice Department in the wake of the SC's interim stay on Maratha quota given as per the provisions of the Socially and Educationally Backward Classes Act, 2018.
