“The Mahabhakas Aghadi couldn’t even sustain the Maratha reservation brought by the then BJP government,” Maharastra Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) President Chandrakant Patil said on Wednesday after the Supreme Court order on Maratha reservation.

The apex court on Wednesday stayed the implementation of Maratha reservation law which granted quota in jobs and education for candidates belonging to the Maratha community in Maharashtra. It said that there will be no Maratha reservation for jobs or college admission for now.

Reacting to this, Patil slammed the Uddhav Thackeray government saying that this was a black day because the ‘Mahabhakas’ Aghadi couldn’t play a competent role in defending the Maratha reservation before the Supreme Court.

“We played a strong role in favour of the Maratha reservation when we were in power. The BJP government had implemented the Maratha quota in jobs and education. However, the same has stayed because the Mahabhakas Aghadi couldn’t play a competent role before the Supreme Court,” Patil said.

The BJP leader further said that neither Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray nor Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar have paid attention to the issue.

The Supreme Court is also hearing the reservation issue in Tamil Nadu but there’s no stay on the quota, Patil said while adding that the matter will be heard before a larger bench.

Meanwhile, the issue of the validity of 16 per cent reservation for Maratha community under Socially and Educationally Backward Classes (SEBC) Act of 2018 has been referred to a larger bench by a three-judge bench led by Justice L Nageswara Rao.

Chief Justice of India SA Bobde will take a call on constituting the bench to hear petitions challenging the constitutional validity of the law. The petitions against the law argue that the total number of quota in Maharashtra exceeds 50 per cent.
