Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis broke his silence on the recent political developments involving Shiv Sena (UBT) MPs by declaring that “the operation has been successful and the patient is perfectly healthy,” a remark widely seen as a reference to the induction of six MPs into the Shiv Sena led by Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde.

According to sources, Fadnavis played a crucial role in helping complete the numbers required for what has been dubbed “Operation Tiger.” While Shinde had reportedly succeeded in securing the support of five MPs, the final breakthrough came after the Chief Minister personally intervened to persuade a sixth MP, whose support was considered vital for the exercise.

Discussions over the possible induction of MPs from the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena faction had been underway since the Assembly election results. However, the issue gained momentum in January 2026 when the BJP's central leadership began seriously considering the proposal.

A key point of deliberation was whether the MPs should join the BJP or Shinde’s Shiv Sena. While several MPs were said to be inclined towards joining the BJP, sources claim that Fadnavis favoured their induction into Shiv Sena. He is understood to have held multiple rounds of discussions with the party's central leadership on the issue.

After months of consultations, the BJP leadership reportedly gave Shinde the go-ahead in April to proceed with the exercise. Over the following weeks, Shinde managed to bring five MPs into his fold. However, efforts to secure additional support stalled, prompting the central leadership to entrust Fadnavis with the task of resolving the deadlock, sources said.

The Chief Minister subsequently contacted the remaining MP and assured him of political support for his future career, according to sources. The move is said to have helped break the impasse and complete the operation.

Political activity intensified during the second week of June, culminating in six MPs travelling to New Delhi and submitting a letter to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, marking a significant setback for the Uddhav Thackeray faction.

The development has strengthened Shinde’s position within the Shiv Sena while adding a new chapter to the ongoing political contest between the rival Sena factions in Maharashtra.
