An unexpected incident occurred during Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde’s inspection of waterlogged areas on Wednesday morning when a Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) sanitation worker fell into an open manhole at Gandhi Market in the King Circle–Sion area.

Mayor Tawde was visiting several flood-affected locations, including Dadar, Hindmata and Gandhi Market, following heavy overnight rainfall that caused severe waterlogging and traffic disruptions across parts of the city. During the inspection, a sanitation worker engaged in drain-cleaning operations accidentally slipped into an uncovered manhole.

The worker was immediately rescued by people present at the site and was reported to be safe. The incident, captured on camera, quickly drew attention and highlighted concerns over safety measures during monsoon-related civic work.

Reacting to the incident, Mayor Tawde expressed strong displeasure and warned civic officials that strict action would be taken against those responsible if safety lapses were found. She emphasised that no manhole should be left open without proper barricading or precautions, especially during heavy rainfall.

The incident has renewed concerns about Mumbai’s monsoon preparedness and the safety of both civic workers and the public during flooding conditions. Civic authorities have been conducting inspections and drainage operations across the city as heavy rains continue to impact normal life.
