Former Maharashtra Chief Minister Shivajirao Patil Nilangekar on Wednesday passed away in Pune. It is learnt that the 90-year-old was admitted to a private hospital and died due to kidney-related complications.

Last month, the veteran Congress leader was tested positive for the coronavirus and was shifted to a private hospital in Pune. However, he was discharged after testing negative two days ago.

Nilangekar’s last rites will be held in his hometown Nilanga in Latur district later today. Sambhaji Patil, the grandson of former Chief Minister, is a BJP MLA and was the cabinet minister in the Devendra Fadnavis government.

Nilangekar was the 10th Chief Minister of Maharashtra and severed from June 1985 to March 1986. He resigned when the Bombay High Court passed strictures against him after his daughter’s marks in the MD (Doctor of Medicine) exams were found to have been fudged.

The case in the Bombay HC was filed after Veteran Journalist Abhay Mokashi, who was a reporter working with the Indian Express, broke the story of fraud in the results of the MD examination.
