During a joint review meeting with civic officials and IT department representatives, Shelar emphasized that AI-based systems should be implemented in municipal operations to ensure transparency, faster execution of projects, and efficient governance. The meeting was attended by BMC Commissioner Ashwini Bhide, MahaIT Director Sanjay Katkar, and senior officials from the Information Technology Department.
Officials presented the current use of AI in civic administration, including drain cleaning operations and public services. Shelar suggested further improvements to make municipal services more transparent and responsive.
He also proposed the use of AI-powered chatbots for handling citizen complaints. According to the plan, complaints registered at municipal offices would be automatically routed to the concerned departments for quicker action.
Citing Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis’s e-file and e-signature initiative, Shelar recommended introducing similar paperless systems within the BMC administration.
The minister also highlighted concerns regarding frequent modifications in municipal tenders. He suggested AI-based monitoring to track changes in tender documents so citizens can access information and verify whether modifications are justified.
Additionally, Shelar proposed organizing hackathons to encourage greater participation of youth and citizens in improving civic governance through technology.
