Indian businessman Gautam Adani, who is the founder and chairman of Adani Group, has now become the second richest man in Asia after overtaking China’s Zhong Shanshan.

According to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, the Adani Group’s net worth is $66.5 billion, while Zhong Shanshan’s is $63.6 billion. With this, Adani becomes the 14th richest businessman in the world.

Gautam Adani now remains just a spot behind Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) chief Mukesh Ambani, who is Asia’s richest man with a net worth of just above $76 billion. On the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, Mukesh Ambani is currently on the 13th spot, just a place above Gautam Adani.

The increase in Adani's wealth, despite the onset of coronavirus pandemic, is largely attributed to the surge in share prices of Adani Green, Adani Enterprises, Adani Gas and Adani Transmission.

These companies had a combined market capitalisation of over INR 8 trillion as of Thursday, May 20. It may be noted that Adani Group’s market capitalisation has almost doubled since the beginning of the calendar year. In comparison, Mukesh Ambani’s RIL has seen a decline of 3.6 per cent in market capitalisation.

Adani’s wealth has increased nearly $34 billion this year, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. It is the third-highest wealth surge this year after Bernard Arnault and Miriam Adelson. On the other hand, Chinese billionaire Zhong Shanshan’s wealth has gone down by over $12 billion this year.
