West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has urged the Maharashtra government for a plot to develop for cancer patients visiting Mumbai for treatment in Mumbai on lines with the Banga Bhawan in Delhi.

Banerjee made the request in a meeting with Maharashtra Environment Minister and Mumbai Guardian minister Aaditya Thackeray during her visit to the city last week. Aaditya had met Banerjee at a south Mumbai hotel with Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut.

Many patients come to Mumbai for treatment, especially to the Tata Memorial Cancer Hospital in Parel and don’t have a place to stay, stated West Bengal CM, adding that she could accommodate these needy patients at the Bengal Bhawan if a plot of land is allotted here to the West Bengal government.

Shiv Sena spokesperson Sanjay Raut, in his weekly column mentioned Mamata Banerjee’s demand was not unreasonable. “West Bengal has contributed to the country’s freedom struggle and social revolution. The two states share an emotional bonding, which must be sustained,” he added.

Odisha Bhawan and Uttar Pradesh Bhawan have already been constructed around Mumbai. In addition, Madhya Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Meghalaya and Assam governments also have their Bhawans.

However, Assam was the first state to build its bhawan in Mumbai.

Besides, land parcels in Mumbai are hard to find and are very expensive, several state governments have constructed bhawan’s in Navi Mumbai.
