In Vashi’s APMC market, Alphonso mangoes have started being exported. Around 15% to 20% is being exported. Compared to the previous year, exports have started in a better way this year, believes APMC exporters. Last year, due to the late start of the season in March, only 5 to 10 percent was exported.
In Gulf countries, London, Australia, Kuwait etc, there is a huge demand for Alphonso mangoes from Devgad, Ratnagiri, and Alibaug. In the APMC market, mangoes arrive in large numbers from April. It is believed that the production will be good this year. However, due to climate change, there is more emphasis on cutting of Alphonso mangoes. In the last two to three days, 11,000 boxes from Devgad, Raigad and Karnataka have entered the APMC market. Post Holi, the arrival of Alphonso mangoes will increase further.
In order to export Alphonso mangoes to Gulf countries, exporters have to export mangoes within the regulatory framework. Mango size, weight, and quality play an important role in exporting mango. Likewise, maintaining the quality of Hapus mangoes in the international market plays an important role. Alphonso mangoes have to go through various processes including checking the quality of mangoes, maintaining a specific temperature for long-term preservation, etc. At present, Alphonso mango exports are priced at INR 2,500 to INR 3,000 per dozen.
