The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) inaugurated its tenth swimming pool on Sunday in the Andheri (West) neighborhood. Located in Gilbert Hill, the newly opened Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Pool will cater to the general public as well as athletes.
Starting on September 3, the BMC initiated the online registration process for pool memberships. But the civic organisation will admit only 2,750 members for a one-year registration. The new swimming pool is scheduled to open its doors to the public in October 2023. The BMC aims to complete the membership registration process before then.
One of the most important features of the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Pool is its stunning backdrop, the historic Gilbert Hill. This basalt rock hill, with an age of over 65 million years, stands as a relic of the Mesozoic era. In 1952, it was designated a national park, and in 2007, it received a grade II heritage designation. The pool will offer visitors a clear and breathtaking view of this geological wonder.
During the opening ceremony, Mangal Prabhat Lodha, the minister of skill development, entrepreneurship, and innovation, praised BMC's effort in creating this pool. He also suggested the construction of a gymnasium in the vicinity. He also emphasised the need to promote Gilbert Hill as a tourism destination.
Kishore Gandhi, the deputy commissioner for BMC, announced that more swimming pools will be unveiled. In the coming month, BMC plans to construct pools in Worli, Vikhroli, and Andheri East (Kondivita). These facilities will provide additional alternatives for pool memberships to cater to the needs of the local population.
