The housing department of the Maharashtra government has expressed its interest in two plots in Mulund for the Navi Dharavis.

The department has requested the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC)'s urban development department to transfer these plots to construct residential units for those affected by the Dharavi Redevelopment Project (DRP).

The area of the property, owned by the BMC, is 46 acres and 18 acres. One plot is located near Thane Check Naka, whereas the other is on Airoli Road. They are both close to one another.

The areas will be part of a number of locations that are being searched to accommodate about 4 lakh slum dwellers that are not eligible for rehabilitation. The government resolution allows shifting of people within 10 kms of Dharavi.

However, the proposal has faced opposition from BJP former MP Kirit Somaiya, who believes that it would not be right to rehabilitate a huge population in one area. It will put huge pressure on existing infrastructure. He has urged to reconsider the intention to purchase such a large amount of land in Mulund.

According to reports, the cost of purchasing the land will be covered by DRPPL. Further, the state government will oversee the land acquisition procedure. The department also promises that the new colony will have amenities comparable to the reconstructed Dharavi. This will include superior healthcare facilities, economic prospects, and educational and vocational training programmes.

The DRP was established by the housing department on July 13, 2023. Adani Properties Ltd was named as a partner in the project.
