The City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) has been appointed as the Special Planning Authority (SPA) for Maharashtra's coastal districts. It will include cities like Raigad, Palghar, Sindhudurg, and Ratnagiri, on the west coast of Maharashtra. This decision was made by the state's urban development department on Monday, February 4.

CIDCO has been asked to set up new offices in each district. These offices will be responsible for approving plans for their respective areas. Before this, the municipal corporation's council, or gramme panchayat, was responsible for making such decisions.

Subodh Kumar, a former BMC commissioner, has been chosen to lead the advisory group. The group will prepare a plan for regional development, employment, and sustainability in Konkan.

CIDCO was established in 1970 to develop Navi Mumbai. Now, it is working on huge infrastructure projects like the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) and the Navi Mumbai Metro.

CIDCO is tasked with comprehensive planning and environmental preservation. It will also focus on eco-friendly tourism, local economic empowerment, and job creation.

The planning agency will also oversee local economic empowerment by joining people in tourism development, processing, and other businesses, creating large-scale jobs, and therefore controlling migration. CIDCO will also need to hire an international agency for this.

The west coast of Maharashtra has a broad economy, with potential for job creation in tourism and processing businesses. It contains a coastline of 720 km from Dahanu to Vengurula. The government plans to expand exports from this region.

The advisory board, led by Subodh Kumar, will prepare a document for the notified area. This will be done in consultation with all stakeholders, including CIDCO.

The region's economy is mostly dependent on economic growth from fish, betel nuts, coconuts, mangoes, and cashew nuts, as well as tourism.
