A 35-year-old man, the son of a former Deputy Mayor of the Mira-Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC), has died after a coconut tree toppled onto his motorcycle during heavy rain and strong winds in Maharashtra's Thane district, officials said on Friday.
The victim, Rahul Ashok Patil, a resident of Murdgaon and son of a former MBMC Deputy Mayor, succumbed to his injuries at a hospital two days after the incident.
According to the district administration, the accident occurred on Wednesday evening when Patil was riding his motorcycle through the Sadanand Nagar area. A coconut tree, uprooted by heavy rainfall and gusty winds, fell onto his vehicle, leaving him critically injured.
Patil was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he remained in critical condition. Despite undergoing treatment for two days, he died on Friday.
Officials said the incident marks the first rain-related fatality in Mira-Bhayandar during the ongoing monsoon season.
