The work of Gokhale Bridge in Mumbai made significant progress on Saturday night with the successful lowering and installation of the first girder. This update signifies that the project is on track with the right schedule.
Reports suggest that one arm of the Gokhale Bridge may open by the end of February. However, some sources predict a more realistic opening date of March 7.
Gopal Krishna Gokhale Bridge is an important east-west link in Andheri. Its first girder was moved and lowered on the nights of December 19 and 20, only weeks after its inauguration.
The open web girder (OWG) of the Gokhale bridge was opened on December 3. It was then slewed 14 metres to the west to connect the entire east-west section. The final 800 mm were done on December 20, following additional safety measures.
The civic organisation plans to start work on the second girder once the first arm is ready for traffic. The goal is to have the entire bridge operational by May 2024.
Following the girder installation, the civic body will begin work on the casting of a deck slab, the construction of an anti-crash barrier, the repair of expansion joints, road paving, painting, and other necessary tasks.
After the 99.8-metre-long Vidyavihar Railway Over Bridge (ROB) in the eastern suburbs, the Gokhale Bridge will be the second-longest ROB with a girder length of ninety metres.
The completion of these tasks is necessary before the bridge can be partially opened. The timeline depends on several factors, such as labour and material availability. The bridge was closed in November 2022 due to structural instability and was subsequently dismantled by the railroads in December of the same year.
