As part of the drive against the use of banned plastic, the authorities have seized 67.54 metric tonnes of single-use plastic. A fine of INR 1.55 crore has also been collected for plastic use, the state assembly was informed on Tuesday, March 10.

The action was taken under the provisions of a state notification banning single-use plastic bags (with or without handles) and bags of less than 50 microns thickness as well as sealed plastic bags or packages used in grocery stores.

The Centre has also banned single-use plastic glasses and spoons under a notification issued in 2021, Environment Minister Pankaja Munde informed the House in a written reply.

The officials inspected over 1.24 lakh establishments and took action against 3,390 establishments, out of which INR 1.55 crore was recovered as fine, the minister said.

He further said that 67.54 metric tonnes of plastic used in the process were seized. The action was taken between April 2025 and January 2026 under the Maharashtra Biodegradable Waste (Control) Act, 2006.
